Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) |

Magnetic resonance imaging allows excellent three dimensional imaging of soft tissue as well as bone structures. In veterinary medicine, use of MRI for brain diseases is considered the gold standard against which all other imaing techniques are compared. We also choose MRI over CT scanning for lumbosacral disease and other complex spinal conditions. Unfortunately, MRI scanners are expensive - both setup and maintenance and this translates into limited availability for dogs and cats. At Pet Emergency & Specialist Centre we are fortunate to have daily acess to a 1.5 Tesla magnet which allows superior image quality and resolution. We have contacts at human diagnostic imaging centres and this also allows us to have specialist radiologists interpret the scans. General anaesthesia is required to completely immobilise the patients for MRI scans. The imaging studies can take up to one hour and we take great care ensuring your pet has a light yet smooth anaesthesia experience. The scans are copied and your family vet will be able to keep this as a record of your pet's condition. Compression of spinal cord
